I want to write this simple blog post on the phrase "paycheck to paycheck." Often, we hear this, and for most people, it brings on negative thoughts. The reality is that most people, their whole lives, live paycheck-to-paycheck. The question is, what are you doing with your money from paycheck-to-paycheck? Do you work to just give it to other people? Do you prioritize yourself and your family’s short-term and long-term future?
There is nothing wrong with living paycheck-to-paycheck if you are budgeting and telling your money where to go and you are doing what you prioritize in your life. I know people who live paycheck-to-paycheck but prioritize a travel fund. They travel every year, sometimes multiple times, using their travel fund, not a credit card. I know people who live paycheck to paycheck in the neighborhood where they want their children to grow up. I know people who live paycheck-to-paycheck so their kids can be in special clubs or sports teams. I know people who live paycheck-to-paycheck and have over a million dollars in their investment portfolio because they prioritize their future life.
However, if you are living paycheck-to-paycheck and not enjoying life, chances are you aren't in control of the paycheck, the paycheck is in control of you.
Change your money mindset of living paycheck-to-paycheck by taking control of the paycheck. Budget, save for an emergency fund, and get out of debt, and you'll have the control and freedom you crave while living paycheck to paycheck.
